When it comes to creating timeless, sophisticated interiors, nothing rivals the transformative power of the perfect white paint. While the idea of "just white" may seem simple, the reality is far more nuanced – the right white can make a space feel airy and expansive, while the wrong one can leave a room feeling cold or dingy. I've learned through years of design work that white paint is perhaps the most challenging color to get right, but when you do, it becomes the ultimate foundation for layered, livable interiors.

The beauty of white paint lies in its ability to serve as both a backdrop and a statement. In smaller spaces, white walls can create the illusion of endless square footage by reflecting light and blurring the boundaries between surfaces. In larger rooms, white provides a serene canvas that allows furniture, art, and architectural details to truly shine. One of the most surprising aspects of working with white paint (like I did in throughout my Roswell Road renovation) is how dramatically different whites can appear throughout the day as natural light shifts and changes.

Understanding undertones is crucial when selecting white paint. Warmer whites with subtle cream or yellow undertones complement traditional furnishings, antique woods, and brass fixtures beautifully. These whites feel inviting and cozy, perfect for bedrooms and living spaces where you want to create intimacy. Cooler whites with gray or blue undertones pair exceptionally well with contemporary furniture, stainless steel appliances, and chrome fixtures. The crispness of cool whites lends itself to modern, minimalist aesthetics and can make spaces feel particularly fresh and clean.

Designer-Approved Popular White Paint Colors

IN ORDER OF BRIGHTNESS (LRV)

Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace (OC-65)

Has an LRV of approximately 90, making it one of the brightest whites available. It is known for having virtually no undertones, which gives it a crisp, clean appearance that works well in modern and traditional spaces alike.

Benjamin Moore Simply White (OC-117)

Has an LRV around 89.5, making it another highly reflective white. It carries a soft warmth with a subtle yellow base and a touch of warm gray, which can make it feel inviting while still looking bright and fresh.

Benjamin Moore Cloud White (OC-130)

Has an LRV of about 85, slightly softer than Simply White. It features gentle yellow and taupe undertones that add warmth, making it a versatile choice for spaces that need a hint of coziness without feeling too creamy.

Benjamin Moore White Dove (OC-17)

Has an LRV of approximately 85, placing it in the same brightness range as Cloud White. It is a soft, warm white with subtle gray undertones that keep it from feeling overly yellow or creamy.

Sherwin Williams Pure White (SW 7005)

Has an LRV near 84. This color is a soft white with barely-there yellow and gray undertones, which keep it from looking stark or too warm. It works well in both contemporary and classic interiors.

Sherwin Williams Greek Villa (SW 7551)

Has an LRV of around 84 and is known for its soft, creamy undertones. It leans slightly warmer than Pure White, giving spaces a welcoming and traditional feel. This is a great alternative to Alabaster that's just slightly less warm.

Sherwin Williams Alabaster (SW 7008)

Has an LRV of approximately 82. It is a warm white with creamy undertones, combining yellow-beige warmth with a hint of gray that creates a balanced greige effect. This makes it a popular choice for spaces needing softness and depth. I had this color in my old living room and I love how it warms up at night.

Backdrop Home Harvest Moon

This color from Schumacher's paint brand does not have a widely published LRV, but it is estimated to be in the low 80s. It is a warm off-white with subtle yellow undertones, creating a cozy, inviting feel without appearing overly creamy or yellow.

Farrow & Ball Wimbourne White

Does not have an official LRV listed, but it is comparable to mid-80s whites. This shade features very soft yellow undertones, giving it a slightly traditional and elegant warmth compared to cooler whites, and is F&B most popular and versatile white paint.
