Modern Meets Classic: Atlanta Beltline Townhouse Tour

Modern Meets Classic: Atlanta Beltline Townhouse Tour

Entryway in Atlanta Beltline townhouse interior design by Kevin Francis O'Gara, how to mix modern and classic, neo-traditional home design style

For this townhouse located directly on Atlanta’s vibrant Beltline trail, my clients wanted their new-build home to feel layered, classic, and deeply personal—without sacrificing modernity or comfort. With a love for entertaining and an enviable art collection, they envisioned a space that would feel welcoming to both guests and their dog, while also serving as a sophisticated backdrop for daily life. I worked with them to weave together sculptural forms, rich textures, and timeless design motifs throughout the home—from the expressive vintage artwork in the entry to a custom-designed banquette and bold bedroom palette. This project is a celebration of curation and contrast, where modern architecture is elevated with character-driven details and enduring style. Find more of my completed interiors in my interior design portfolio.

The home has two entry spaces, one on the ground floor (above) where I placed a sculptural console and a wonderfully expressive vintage portrait painting. After climbing the stairs to the main level, you are greeted by a home bar vignette which sets the stage for gracious entertaining with plush club chairs and a Venetian-style mirror.

The bar area is where a breakfast table might typically be placed, but I love how the seating area creates a more inviting, and functional, entry and transitional space from the kitchen to living room. The living room design started with my client's Womb-style lounge chair, which I paired with a matching chair across from a sofa and leather daybed to avoid obstructing the light. Velvet-frame drapery softens the wide windows and a contemporary Oushak area rug brings a bright foundation to the space.

I carried the blue accents through to the dining area, where I maximized entertaining capacity. I designed a custom leather channel-tufted banquette with hidden storage drawers below, and paired my clients existing Eames plywood dining chairs with the curves of the acacia dining table. A fabulous chinoiserie grasscloth wallpaper plays a fun twist on a classic toile pattern, with a trio of bullseye mirrors lining the wall.

The primary bedroom got a dose of cozy drama with Sherwin Williams charcoal bown Black Fox paint. The existing millwork was accentuated by carrying the paint up onto the ceiling, creating a graphic focal point above the low-profile built in bed. Brass swing-arm sconces illuminate the bedsides and a tufted leather daybed adds low slung seating to the room. We brought my client's brown mohair armchair into this space for a great tone-on-tone moment. On the ceiling, a minimal metal chandelier was topped off with hunter green shades.

I loved mixing modern and classic style in this intown home! I wanted the end result to have moments of formality, while keeping the overall aesthetic comfortable and inviting with playful punctations. This townhouse transformation is a testament to how thoughtful design can turn a new-build into a richly layered home that feels both lived-in and elevated. By combining vintage finds, custom furnishings, and a tailored palette of rich neutrals and bold accents, the space now flows beautifully from room to room—ready for relaxed mornings, lively evenings, and everything in between. Whether entertaining guests at the Beltline bar vignette or unwinding in the moody bedroom retreat, every corner reflects the personality and lifestyle of my clients. If you're looking to infuse your own space with soulful, style-forward layers, I hope this home offers plenty of inspiration.
