The pleat is the thing. A hardback shade blocks light and reads flat; a pleated shade catches it along every fold, so the shade itself has depth even before you get to the cloth. The shapes here run through the whole vocabulary: empire in a box pleat (Heath in linen, Brook in silk), shirred or gathered silk (Park), corseted and drawn in at the waist (Whitmore), scalloped in raffia (Pemberton), and banded linen with a contrast trim (Hill).
