The Best Upholstered Entryway Benches for Every Budget

Entry hall with blue cloud wallpaper, ikat upholstered bench and geometric runner on The Francis Files

The entry at Dove Hill, the Buckhead townhouse I designed with my mom, never got a bench. A pink chinoiserie mural wraps that stair hall, and the slim console carrying her heirloom lamps had to keep the floor clear. It was the right call for that narrow space. In almost every entry I have worked on since, though, the first piece I look for is an upholstered bench, because the entry is the one room where everyone stops to do something: pull off boots, set down a bag, wait for a ride.

An upholstered bench does what a console cannot. It gives you a place to sit, it softens a room that is usually all doors and hard floors, and it is the easiest way to bring fabric and color in before anyone reaches the living room. A bench in a stripe, a gingham or a deep velvet tells you something about the house the moment the door opens.

Below are the upholstered entryway benches I would actually specify, from a $200 find at Target to a travertine piece that is very much a splurge, sorted into three price tiers. You don't need to spend a fortune to get a good one. You do need the right length, height and fabric, so I've started with the rules I use on projects.

How to Choose an Upholstered Entryway Bench

Five things decide whether a bench works at the front door. Get these right and almost any style will look intentional.

Length: Aim for about two thirds the width of the wall, with at least six inches of breathing room on each side. In most halls that lands between 40 and 60 inches.

Seat height: Most benches sit 17 to 19 inches off the floor, the same as a dining chair. That is the height that makes putting on shoes comfortable. Lower benches look sleek but are harder to get up from.

Depth: In a narrow hall, keep the depth to 14 to 16 inches so you still have a clear path of about 36 inches. Deeper benches and settees need a true foyer.

Fabric: The front door is the hardest-working spot in the house. Choose performance fabric, leather or faux leather, a tight velvet, or a pattern like a stripe, gingham or kilim that hides wear. Skip loose, nubby weaves that snag on bag zippers.

Legs or a base: Open legs keep a small entry airy and let the runner show underneath. A solid or skirted base looks more substantial and hides the boots that inevitably end up under it.

The Best Upholstered Entryway Benches Under $400

This tier is where the clever buys live. A few come from Target and Wayfair, and in each case the shape or the fabric is doing better work than the price tag. For a first apartment, a rental or a back hall that takes a beating, any of these is plenty.

Burl Wood Upholstered Entryway Bench Upholstered Entryway Bench

Burl Wood Upholstered Entryway Bench - $200.00

Burl veneer is the detail that makes this one look far more expensive than it is. The waterfall base reads almost Art Deco, and the nubby cream seat softens it. It comes from the Threshold line Studio McGee designs for Target, which is why the proportions are better than the price suggests. Put it under a round mirror and it holds its own.

Faux Shearling Upholstered Bench with Turned Wood Frame Upholstered Entryway Bench

Faux Shearling Upholstered Bench with Turned Wood Frame - $221.99

A plush faux shearling seat on a slim stained frame, with a stretcher low enough to slide a pair of boots under. I like the texture against a painted floor or a flatweave runner, where everything else is flat. For a small apartment entry where you only need a perch, it does the job without crowding the hall.

Scalloped Edge Striped Upholstered Bench Upholstered Entryway Bench

Scalloped Edge Striped Upholstered Bench - $224.99

The scalloped apron is what sold me. It is a small dressmaker detail you usually only see on custom pieces, and here it comes with a soft blue stripe seat. This is the bench I would put in a cottage entry or a back hall with beadboard, where a little charm is the whole point.

Woven Back Bench with Upholstered Cushion Upholstered Entryway Bench

Woven Back Bench with Upholstered Cushion - $240.00

Another Studio McGee for Target find, and the most practical bench in this tier. The rush-woven back and arms keep coats from rubbing the wall, and the loose cushion can be pulled off and cleaned. Natural wood and seagrass go with nearly every runner, which is why I keep recommending it for family entries.

Tufted Faux Leather Upholstered Bench with Bolster Upholstered Entryway Bench

Tufted Faux Leather Upholstered Bench with Bolster - $279.99

At 66 inches this is long enough to anchor a wide entry or the foot of a king bed. The biscuit tufting and single bolster give it a tailored, daybed feel, and faux leather wipes clean after wet shoes and grocery bags. A sensible choice for a busy door.

Cane Back Upholstered Entryway Bench Upholstered Entryway Bench

Cane Back Upholstered Entryway Bench - $299.00

Black frame, cane back and a natural linen seat: a combination that reads both French and a little modern. The back is low enough to hang art above it without the two competing. I would pair it with a checkerboard runner or a bold wallpaper, where the graphic black lines can stand up to pattern.

Olive Velvet Upholstered Bench with Iron Base Upholstered Entryway Bench

Olive Velvet Upholstered Bench with Iron Base - $329.00

Olive velvet on a thin iron base with neatly capped feet. It has the slim campaign profile I gravitate toward in narrow halls, and the color is the kind of earthy green that sits well against warm wood floors and a red or rust rug. Easily the best color story in the budget tier.

Curved Metal Upholstered Bench Upholstered Entryway Bench

Curved Metal Upholstered Bench - $399.99

The bent metal sides make this read like a small sculpture, with a tweedy upholstered seat slung between them. It is the most modern pick in this tier, and it works best in a spare entry with one large piece of art. Keep the styling minimal so the silhouette does the work.

The Best Upholstered Entryway Benches, $400 to $900

The middle tier is where the materials improve: real rattan, iron bases, performance fabrics and kilim. These are the benches I reach for most often on projects, because they look collected without a four-figure commitment.

Rattan Upholstered Bench with Cushion Upholstered Entryway Bench

Rattan Upholstered Bench with Cushion - $449.00

Wrapped rattan, an X stretcher and a fitted cushion. This is the bench I would use in a coastal house or a sunroom entry, but it also warms up a city apartment that skews cool and white. The open base keeps it visually light, so it suits a tight hall.

Faux Bamboo Upholstered Bench Upholstered Entryway Bench

Faux Bamboo Upholstered Bench - $621.75

Faux bamboo legs and fretwork corner brackets give this Ballard bench a Regency note that I love in an entry. The parchment seat is a quiet neutral, which leaves room for a patterned runner or wallpaper to take the lead. It is a piece that feels collected rather than bought as a set.

Iron Curule Upholstered Bench Upholstered Entryway Bench

Iron Curule Upholstered Bench - $699.00

A curule base in black iron with a striped seat, which is about as classical as a bench gets. The double-C legs are a form that goes back to Roman magistrates and never really left. It is narrow and open, so it slides into a hall without blocking light, and it pairs well with a sculptural console.

Terracotta Velvet Upholstered Bench Upholstered Entryway Bench

Terracotta Velvet Upholstered Bench - $799.00

Rust velvet on a forged-iron base with a slight swag between the legs. The color does a lot in an entry, especially against cream walls, deep green trim or a blue and white rug. I like it as the one warm, saturated note in an otherwise quiet hall.

Spool Iron Upholstered Bench Upholstered Entryway Bench

Spool Iron Upholstered Bench - $799.00

The bobbin-turned iron base is the detail here: it nods to Jacobean spool furniture but in a dark, matte metal that feels current. The linen top is wide enough to sit on comfortably while you pull on shoes. Good against plaster walls or limewash.

French Cane Back Upholstered Settee Upholstered Entryway Bench

French Cane Back Upholstered Settee - $799.99

If your entry has the width for a proper settee, this is a lot of French charm for the price. Cane back, padded arms and a fluted frame in a soft weathered finish. Use it where you want the entry to feel like a room people actually sit in, not just pass through.

Woven Seagrass Daybed Bench with Bolsters Upholstered Entryway Bench

Woven Seagrass Daybed Bench with Bolsters - $819.00

Woven seagrass sides, a cream performance cushion and two bolsters. Performance fabric matters more at the door than anywhere else in the house, and this one makes it look relaxed instead of utilitarian. A strong choice for a lake house or a family mudroom.

Kilim Upholstered Bench with Turned Legs Upholstered Entryway Bench

Kilim Upholstered Bench with Turned Legs - $829.00

Upholstered in a flatweave kilim on turned wood legs, this is the bench to buy if you want pattern without committing to wallpaper. Kilim is tough and hides dirt, which makes it a smart entry fabric. I would put it on a plain sisal or a solid wool runner so the kilim leads.

Rattan Loop Upholstered Bench Upholstered Entryway Bench

Rattan Loop Upholstered Bench - $849.00

The looped rattan base has a 1970s, slightly Palm Beach feel, and the cushion is generous. It is long and low, which suits a wide entry or a landing under a window. Pair it with a lacquered console or a painted floor if you want to lean into the era.

The investment pieces: better frames, more substantial upholstery and a few designer collaborations. If your entry is the first thing guests see and you want it to set the tone for the whole house, start here.

French Country Upholstered Bench with Back Upholstered Entryway Bench

French Country Upholstered Bench with Back - $959.00

A three-seat bench in carved oak with nailhead trim and an upholstered back panel. It reads like a piece you inherited, which is exactly what I want in an entry. The performance fabric makes the cream seat practical. It also works as banquette seating if the entry doubles as a breakfast corner.

Brown Velvet Upholstered Bench with Forged Iron Base Upholstered Entryway Bench

Brown Velvet Upholstered Bench with Forged Iron Base - $1,099.00

Athena Calderone designed this one for Crate and Barrel, and it shows in the restraint: chocolate velvet, a thin forged-iron frame and nothing extra. Brown velvet is having a moment for good reason. It is warm, forgiving, and it looks right next to aged brass and walnut.

Performance Upholstered Bench with Black Frame Upholstered Entryway Bench

Performance Upholstered Bench with Black Frame - $1,260.00

A curved black frame with a cushioned seat and a padded back rail, upholstered in Crypton. It has the presence of a piece of art in a spare entry, and the stain-resistant fabric means the white can actually stay white. Best in a modern or transitional house with clean architecture.

Linen Daybed Bench with Iron Scroll Frame Upholstered Entryway Bench

Linen Daybed Bench with Iron Scroll Frame - $1,359.00

Scrolled iron ends, a natural linen seat and round bolsters. It is closer to a daybed than a bench, so it needs a wide entry or a landing, but where it fits it looks quietly grand. I would hang a large painting above it and keep everything else simple.

Ticking Stripe Entry Bench with Mirror and Drawer Upholstered Entryway Bench

Ticking Stripe Entry Bench with Mirror and Drawer - $1,399.00

A hall stand in the old sense: tall mirror frame, coat hook, ticking-stripe cushion and a drawer for keys and dog leashes. It solves the whole entry in one piece, which is useful when there is no wall for a separate mirror. The tapered top gives it a bit of Arts and Crafts character.

Channel Tufted Upholstered Bench Upholstered Entryway Bench

Channel Tufted Upholstered Bench - $1,499.00

Channel-tufted seat on a dark sculptural base that curves down to the floor at each end. At 70 inches it is long, so save it for a generous entry or a gallery wall. The light brown upholstery is a good neutral that leans warm rather than gray.

Gustavian Upholstered Bench with Spindle Back Upholstered Entryway Bench

Gustavian Upholstered Bench with Spindle Back - $1,499.25

A painted Gustavian frame with a spindle back, fluted legs and an upholstered seat and back. It brings the soft Swedish look into an entry without feeling twee, especially in gray-green or a creamy linen. I would use it in an older house with paneled walls.

Upholstered Storage Bench Upholstered Entryway Bench

Upholstered Storage Bench - $1,599.00

A solid wood box base with a deep upholstered top, and the entire base is storage. If your entry has no closet, this is the piece I would buy first. The simple profile works in a mudroom or a modern entry, and the lid makes a comfortable seat.

Cognac Leather Upholstered Bench with Open Back Upholstered Entryway Bench

Cognac Leather Upholstered Bench with Open Back - $1,624.00

Cognac faux leather seat, a woven rope back with a cutout, and natural oak legs. It has a mid-century softness and a lot of comfort for an entry piece. Cognac is one of the most useful colors at a front door. It hides scuffs and warms up white and gray halls.

Gingham Upholstered Bench with Wood Frame Upholstered Entryway Bench

Gingham Upholstered Bench with Wood Frame - $1,668.00

Sage gingham on a low-armed frame with stained wood legs. Pepper Home does this kind of tailored, cottage-leaning upholstery very well, and gingham is one of my favorite ways to bring pattern into an entry. It looks great with a striped runner and a botanical print above.

Woven Saddle Leather Bench with Bolsters Upholstered Entryway Bench

Woven Saddle Leather Bench with Bolsters - $1,874.00

Woven saddle leather straps on a brass X frame, with leather bolsters at each end. The goop collaboration with CB2 is one of the more design-forward pieces here. It is long at 75 inches, so it needs room, but in a large entry it reads like a find from a Paris dealer.

Shop now →

Skirted Camelback Upholstered Settee Upholstered Entryway Bench

Skirted Camelback Upholstered Settee - $1,874.25

A fully skirted settee with a camelback silhouette and a loose seat cushion. Skirted pieces feel soft and English in an entry, and this one has the scale to anchor a wide hall. Use a washable or performance fabric and it can live at the front door without worry.

Shop now →

Travertine Bench with Velvet Cushion Upholstered Entryway Bench

Travertine Bench with Velvet Cushion - $1,999.00

A cantilevered travertine base with a cognac velvet cushion on top. Stone at the entry is a smart material choice: it does not scuff, it does not mind wet umbrellas, and it adds weight to a room that is often all walls and doors. This is the statement pick of the list.

Entry with a slatted wood platform bench, stacked books and large-scale photograph on The Francis Files

Design: Disc Interiors

How to Style an Upholstered Entryway Bench

Ground it with a runner: A bench floating on a bare floor always looks temporary. Run a rug the length of the hall and let it extend past each end of the bench. Pattern on the floor and pattern on the seat can work together if one is small in scale and the other is large. My entry hall rug ideas go deeper on sizing.

Hang something above it: Art or a mirror should hang 8 to 10 inches above the bench, or above its back if it has one, and measure about two thirds of its width. One large piece almost always looks better than a cluster of small ones in a hall.

Light it: An entry needs a soft light for the evening, not just the ceiling fixture. A pair of sconces flanking the art or a lamp on a nearby console makes the bench feel like part of a room.

Keep the styling practical: A basket underneath for shoes, a tray for mail, one pillow at most. A bench piled with throw pillows is a bench nobody sits on.

Pair it with a console: If the hall has the depth, a console on one wall and a bench on the other gives you a landing spot and a seat. My sculptural console table roundup has pieces that pair well with every bench above.

Upholstered Entryway Benches: Frequently Asked Questions

What size bench should I get for my entryway?

Roughly two thirds the width of the wall, which is usually 40 to 60 inches in a typical hall. In a narrow space, keep the depth to 14 to 16 inches so you keep a clear 36-inch path.

How high should an entryway bench be?

About 17 to 19 inches to the top of the seat, the same as a dining chair. That height makes it easy to sit down and pull on shoes.

What is the best fabric for an entryway bench?

Performance fabric, leather, faux leather and tightly woven velvet hold up best. Patterns like stripes, gingham and kilim also disguise everyday wear.

Can I put a bench in a small entryway?

Yes. Choose open legs and a shallow depth, and leave a few inches of wall on each side. Seeing the floor underneath makes a small entry feel larger.

Finish the Entry Underneath and Around It

A good bench gets you most of the way, but an entry only comes together when the floor and walls are doing their part. In nearly every photo in this post, the bench is sitting on a runner or against a wallpaper that gives it context, and that is what makes it look designed rather than placed.

If you are pulling your own entry together, my wool runner rugs are sized for halls and stairs, the Labyrinth Collection brings a maze pattern that plays well with a striped or solid seat, and my wallpaper designs are the quickest way to make a small foyer feel like a room. A table lamp with a pleated shade on a nearby console takes care of the light.
