Travel by Design: La Dolce Vita at Casa Monti Hotel
(via Laura Gonzalez)
Nestled within Rome's historic Monti district, Casa Monti stands is a beautiful testament to thoughtful restoration and sublime interior design. This boutique hotel, which opened its doors in early 2023, occupies a meticulously renovated 18th-century palazzo that seamlessly weaves Italy's storied past with contemporary luxury. The distinguished French designer Laura Gonzalez—known for her work on prestigious projects like the Cartier flagship in Paris and Lapérouse restaurant—has transformed this historical treasure into an intimate sanctuary where Renaissance grandeur meets bohemian sophistication.
Monti, one of Rome's oldest neighborhoods, provides the perfect backdrop for Gonzalez's vision. Once a working-class area in ancient times, Monti has evolved into an artistic haven filled with workshops, vintage boutiques, and authentic trattorias. Casa Monti embraces the local spirit while honoring the district's rich history, sitting just steps away from iconic landmarks like the Roman Forum and Colosseum.
Gonzalez's signature "organized chaos" approach shines throughout the hotel's interiors. Each of the 28 rooms features a distinctive color palette inspired by Rome's terracotta rooftops, azure skies, and the verdant gardens of Villa Borghese. The designer's masterful mixing of patterns—from hand-painted Italian ceramic tiles to custom-woven textiles—creates spaces that feel simultaneously bold and harmonious. Antique furnishings sourced from local Roman markets converse effortlessly with contemporary pieces crafted by Italian artisans specifically for the property.
The hotel's central courtyard serves as its heart, where a restored Renaissance fountain creates a tranquil soundtrack for guests enjoying an aperitivo. The adjoining restaurant, Tavola Monti, showcases Gonzalez's flair for creating convivial spaces with its sumptuous velvet banquettes, hand-forged brass lighting fixtures, and a stunning ceiling mural commissioned by a Roman artist that reimagines classical mythology through a contemporary lens.

One of my favorite aspects of Casa Monti's hotel design is the integration of Roman craftsmanship. Throughout the renovation process, Gonzalez collaborated with local artisans—marble workers, mosaic artists, and woodworkers—many representing workshops that have operated for generations. This commitment to preserving traditional techniques while reimagining them for contemporary use reflects Rome itself: a city forever balancing reverence for its past with an eye toward the future.
For the design enthusiast visiting the Eternal City, Casa Monti offers more than just accommodation—it provides an immersive journey through Rome's aesthetic heritage, masterfully curated by one of today's most visionary designers.
