I am suspicious of most claims about technology and design, largely because the people making them are usually selling the technology. But something has genuinely shifted in the last few years, and it is not the part anyone leads with. It is not that the work looks different. It is that decisions now happen earlier.
That sounds small. It is not. Every expensive mistake in this business comes from a decision made too late to change cheaply: the tile ordered before anyone stood in the room, the joinery drawn before the window was moved, the rug sized to a plan that got revised. Anything that pulls a decision forward pays for itself several times over.

Visualization moved the argument forward
Clients have always struggled to read a plan, and designers have always known it and quietly worked around it. Photorealistic rendering removed the need to work around it. Changing a finish or a light temperature during the presentation itself, rather than going away and coming back in a week, turns a review into an actual conversation. The practical payoff is fewer revisions during construction, and construction revisions are the ones that cost real money because they involve removing something already installed.
Spatial computing is extending this again. Deloitte's 2025 research on the future of spatial computing points to three-dimensional spatial data being used for simulations that behave much more like real environments, which for interiors means immersive walkthroughs and placing furniture in a room before it exists. Houzz's 2025 survey of more than 700 construction and design professionals found 34 percent already using AI in their businesses, with adopters reporting average savings of over three hours a week. That is a real number and an unglamorous one: most of the time saved is administrative rather than creative.

Autodesk's 2025 State of Design and Make research found 43 percent of early adopters reporting significant operational improvements, while only 40 percent of surveyed leaders felt their organizations were close to their implementation goals. What none of it does is decide. Software will generate a hundred rooms without knowing which one suits somebody's habits, or how the light falls through their windows in the afternoon. It will also produce a convincing image that ignores construction tolerances, sourcing reality, or how a material ages, and ageing is most of what separates a good specification from a photogenic one. For a high-end residential interior that is genuinely appealing. Anyone who has tried to match a paint from eleven years ago, or work out what is behind a wall before opening it, understands the value immediately. It quietly expands what a designer hands over, from a finished room to a record of one.
The eye is still the job
So: visualization moves decisions earlier, AI widens the search, shared platforms stop the version drift, and twins extend the useful life of the information. All real, all worth having.
None of it touches the part that is actually difficult. Knowing which of the hundred options is right, whether a material will look better or worse in five years, how a room should feel at different hours, and what somebody means when they say they want it to feel calm. The studios that will do well are the ones that automate the documentation and the coordination in order to spend more attention on those questions, not less. Contrast and intention still tell a better story than anything that matches perfectly, and that judgment is not in the software.
