
Everything in this room that makes it quiet is also what makes it look finished. That is not a coincidence.
People describe the problem to me in a dozen different ways and it is always the same problem.
The room is exhausting. Conversation is tiring. You can hear the dishwasher from the sofa. The television has to go louder than it should. Somebody laughs in the kitchen and it arrives in the sitting area like a slap. Nobody says "my room has an acoustic problem", because that is not how it feels. It feels like the room is unrestful and no one can work out why.
Then they put more soft furnishings in without knowing that is what they are doing, and it gets better, and they think they solved a decorating problem.
What we actually did to these rooms
The last thirty years of residential architecture removed almost everything that used to absorb sound, and did it deliberately.
We took out the walls, which were the things stopping noise travelling from one activity to another. We replaced fitted carpet with hard floors. We enlarged the windows and reduced what hangs at them. We flattened plaster ceilings and took out the coving. We moved to leaner upholstery on legs rather than heavy pieces sitting to the floor. And then we put the kitchen, which is the noisiest room in any house, in the same volume as the sofa.
Every one of those is a defensible design decision. Together they produce a large box with parallel hard surfaces, which is essentially the recipe for reverberation. Sound leaves its source, hits a hard plane, comes back, hits another, and hangs around in the room for far longer than it should. That lingering is what makes speech hard to follow and what makes an open-plan room tiring rather than sociable.
The good news is that the fix is not acoustic engineering. It is textiles, and it looks like decorating.
Start with the floor, because it is the biggest surface
In almost every open-plan room, the floor is the largest uninterrupted hard plane in the building. It is also the one you can change without touching the structure.
A large rug is the highest-return acoustic intervention available in a domestic room, by a distance. Not a small one floating in the middle of the seating group, which does very little either acoustically or visually. A rug big enough that the front legs of every seat sit on it, and ideally big enough to run under the whole arrangement.
Three things make a rug work harder here:
- Size. Coverage is doing the work. This is the one case where going up a size is not just an aesthetic improvement.
- Fibre. Wool absorbs meaningfully better than synthetic pile. Its scaled, crimped structure is porous in a way extruded fibre is not, which is one of several reasons wool earns its price.
- Density and underlay. A dense pile over a felt underlay absorbs more than a thin rug laid straight onto stone. The underlay is not just about slipping.
In a genuinely large room, one rug often will not reach. That is where layering earns its keep, and where zoning a great room with more than one rug stops being a styling trick and starts being functional. Then the windows
Glass is as reflective as it looks. A wall of it facing a hard floor is the worst pairing in the room.
Full-length lined curtains do real acoustic work, and interlined ones do considerably more. Blinds do almost none, which is worth knowing before choosing between them for a room you already find noisy. The absorption comes from mass and from the air held in the folds, so generous gather matters: a curtain that stacks properly is doing more than one hung flat.
This is one of those cases where the acoustically correct answer and the decoratively correct answer are the same answer. Skimpy curtains have always looked mean. Now you have a second reason.
Then the furniture
Upholstery absorbs. Timber, glass, leather and stone reflect.
You do not have to upholster everything, and a room of nothing but soft forms is dull. But in a hard room, the balance is worth tilting: a fully upholstered sofa rather than an exposed frame, seating that comes closer to the floor, a skirted piece somewhere, cushions that are actually filled.
Open shelving with books on it is quietly excellent, because irregular objects scatter sound rather than bouncing it straight back. A wall of books is one of the best acoustic surfaces you can have, which is why libraries feel the way they do. Art on canvas helps slightly. Art under glass does not.
And the ceiling nobody looks at
Here is the surface everyone forgets. The ceiling is the same square footage as the floor, it is flat, it is hard, and in an open-plan room it is completely uninterrupted.
Once the floor, the windows and the furniture are doing their share and the room is still ringing, the ceiling is what is left. Traditional architecture handled this without meaning to, through coffering, beams and heavy cornice, all of which break up a flat plane. If you are building or renovating, that is the elegant route.
If you are not, acoustic ceiling tiles and panels have improved enormously and no longer mean the suspended grid of a 1980s office. They can be recessed, coloured, or set into a coffer so they read as a detail rather than a treatment. In a double-height space or a converted volume with a hard roof plane, this is often the only thing that will fix it, and it is worth doing properly rather than accepting a room you avoid using.
How to work out what your room needs
Stand in the middle of it and clap once, sharply.
If the sound stops dead, the room is fine. If it rings on, or if you hear a flutter between two surfaces, you have your answer. Do it again after the rug goes down.
Then work in order of surface area: floor first, then glazing, then furniture, then ceiling. Most rooms are fixed by the first two, and the people who end up needing the fourth are usually in a double-height space or a conversion with a lot of hard structure and a lot of volume.
The point of all this
Houses should be lived in, and a room that is tiring to sit in does not get lived in. It gets passed through on the way somewhere quieter.
What I find genuinely satisfying about this problem is that the solutions are not compromises. A bigger rug, better curtains, more generous upholstery, a ceiling with some depth to it. Every single one of those is what you would do anyway to make the room look considered rather than sparse. The acoustics come free with the decorating, provided the decorating is done properly.
