"How much does an interior designer cost?" is the first thing most people want to know and the hardest to answer in one number, because designers price in several different ways and projects vary enormously. So instead of a misleading single figure, here is how the pricing actually works, what drives it up or down, and how to budget so there are no surprises.
The ways designers charge
Hourly. The designer bills for their time, often somewhere in the low-to-mid hundreds per hour. Clean and transparent, best for smaller or open-ended jobs.
Flat or project fee. A single agreed price for a defined scope. You know the design cost up front, which makes budgeting easy, and it rewards efficiency.
Cost-plus (markup on furnishings). The designer sources products at trade pricing and adds a margin. You get access to trade-only lines, and the designer is paid through the goods rather than only their time.
Per-room or package. A set price to design a specific room or a bundle of rooms. Predictable and easy to compare.
The consultation. Many designers, including my studio, start with a paid consultation, typically from a modest flat fee into the low hundreds. It screens for serious clients and respects everyone's time, and it is often credited toward a larger project.

What actually drives the cost
Three things move the number most. Scope: a single room costs a fraction of a whole-home renovation. Sourcing: custom and trade-only pieces cost more than retail, and the furnishings themselves are usually the largest line in any project, well above the design fee. And your designer's experience and market: an established designer in a major city commands more than a newcomer, and you are paying for judgment that prevents expensive mistakes. Treat any single online "average" with skepticism. The honest answer is that it depends on what you are actually doing.
How to budget for a project
Set a total budget before you start and be candid about it with your designer, including the furnishings, not just the design fee. A good designer will plan to your number and tell you where it is best spent. Prioritize the rooms that matter most rather than spreading a budget thin across the whole house, and remember the real return: a designer who steers you away from the wrong-size rug, the sofa that will not fit, or the trend you will tire of often saves more than the fee itself.
