An elegant sofa is not the same thing as a formal one. The most beautiful living rooms I have worked on in Atlanta, in Buckhead houses that have been in families for three generations and in condos off the Beltline that were finished last spring, all have a sofa you can actually sit on for three hours with a drink. Elegance is about proportion and line and the quality of the sit, not about whether you are allowed to put your feet up. Houses should be lived in.
So this is a list of twelve elegant sofas for a classic living room, organized by silhouette rather than price, because the silhouette is the decision. The English roll arm, the tight-back tuxedo, the gentle curve, the deep bench, the piece that has to double as a guest bed. Prices were checked on each retailer's own site the week this was published, and I have written the construction under every one, since the difference between a sofa that lasts four years and one that lasts forty is in the frame and the springs, not the fabric.
What makes a sofa elegant in a classic room
Three things. First, the arm. A rolled English arm, a slim track arm or a tuxedo arm all read as considered; an overstuffed pillow arm reads as a recliner without the mechanism. Second, the leg. Turned wood, a tapered walnut, or a slim metal foot lifts the sofa off the floor and lets the rug show, and a sofa that shows its legs always looks lighter and more expensive than a skirted one of the same price. Third, the back. Tight backs are the most tailored; loose cushions are more comfortable but need to be plumped, and a classic room with a slumped sofa looks tired instantly.
Then there is what goes under it. A sofa in a classic room wants a rug big enough that at least the front legs sit on it, and in a room this formal I want pattern and depth on the floor: a hand-knotted piece from our Iconium collection under a velvet sofa, or, if the sofa is a curve, something more graphic like a Labyrinth maze rug so the geometry and the curve play against each other. The English roll arm: the classic living room default
If you are not sure, buy this. The English roll arm has a low, soft arm, a loose seat cushion, and turned legs, and it has looked correct in a traditional room since the 1920s. It is the sofa I put in more classic living rooms than any other.

Pottery Barn's Carlisle is the English roll arm sofa most of my clients end up with, because it comes in four lengths from a 60-inch apartment sofa to a 91-inch grand, and because the construction is better than the price suggests: corner-blocked frame with mortise-and-tenon joints, no-sag springs, and cushions you can order down-wrapped or firmer. Get it in Everydaylinen in a color, not oatmeal.

Square Arm Sofa with Down-Wrapped Cushions - from $1,799
The Palmetto is the Carlisle's quieter cousin, a square arm and a cylindrical leg instead of the roll and the turning, and it is the one I use when the room already has a lot of curves. Same mortise-and-tenon frame, same springs, down-blend cushions as standard. Three lengths to 99 inches.

A tight back is a sofa with no loose back cushions at all, and it is the most elegant shape there is because nothing can slump. Seventy-eight inches is the length nobody makes well, and the Dylan is the exception. Tufted tight back, slim arms, a 100,000-double-rub velvet in an olive that is the exact green I would put in a classic room with cream walls and a patterned rug. Solid parawood frame, sinuous springs.

Athena Calderone's Raffiné for Crate & Barrel is the sofa in this list I would call properly elegant: a low tight back, a slim track arm, loose feather-blend seat cushions on a Flexolator suspension, made in the United States on an FSC hardwood frame. The velvet is a poly-cotton blend that takes light beautifully. Ninety-three or 105 inches.

Curved sofas: a little glamour
A gentle curve is the Hollywood Regency move, and it is how I make a classic room feel like it belongs to someone under fifty. Keep the curve shallow; a full crescent only works in a very large room.

A curve is the fastest way to make a classic room feel current, and CB2's Muir, designed by Lawson-Fenning, is a gentle one rather than a kidney bean. Low Curved Sofa in Performance Basketweave - from $1,199
West Elm's Laurent is the affordable curve: low profile, a firmer sit, walnut-finished legs, in three lengths from 76 to 96 inches. The camel Marled Basketweave is the finish to order. It is contract grade, which is West Elm's way of saying it will survive a family, and at this price it is the best-looking sofa I know of under $1,500.

Deep bench and lounge sofas: for the room you actually use
Most classic houses have a formal living room and a family room, and the family room sofa can be deep and low without embarrassing anyone, as long as the fabric and the color are chosen with the same care.

Crate & Barrel's Monterey Deep is the sofa for the family room off a classic living room, the one people actually lie on. Forty-five inches deep, 94 inches long, fiber and feather-down cushions on a Flexolator suspension, FSC kiln-dried hardwood, made in the United States and built to order in your fabric. Choose a chenille or a bouclé and it stops looking like a family room sofa.

Track-Arm Bench Sofa, 105 Inches - $2,099
A 105-inch bench sofa is a very specific solution, and when a long wall in a classic room needs one piece rather than a sofa and two chairs, the Aris is it. Hardwood frame, a feather-down blend over foam in the seat, a slim track arm, and more than two hundred fabrics. Under $2,100 for the length is remarkable.

Deep Lounge Sofa in Performance Chenille - from $1,399
The Haven is West Elm's bestseller for a reason: low, deep, casual, in nine lengths from 60 to 108 inches, hand-built and contract grade. It is not a formal sofa and I would not put it in a formal room, but as the second sofa in a classic house, the one in the den, in a tawny chenille, it earns its place.

Split-Frame Linen-Blend Sofa, 91 Inches - $1,199
Article's Abisko splits into two pieces, which is the detail that matters if you have ever tried to get a 91-inch sofa up a townhouse stair. Kiln-dried larch frame, brushed aluminum feet, a linen-viscose blend in Welsh gray. It is Scandinavian in shape, so give it a traditional rug and an antique table and it settles right into a classic room.

Every classic house has one room that is a study most of the year and a guest room at Christmas, and the Riley is the sofa bed that does not look like one. Napa performance fabric in white, 84 inches, and a real 4.5-inch memory foam mattress inside a steel mechanism. Fifty thousand rubs and a stain finish, so the white is less brave than it sounds.

Fabric, color and the rest of the room
Velvet is the elegant fabric, and a performance velvet at 100,000 double rubs or more will take a family. Linen and linen blends are softer and more relaxed and they wrinkle, which is either charming or maddening depending on who you are. For color in a classic room I lean green, blue or camel: green and blue because they are the colors of the trees and the sky and you never tire of them, camel because it is warm without being brown. Then a hint of red somewhere nearby, even if it is only the binding of a book on the side table.
Pair the sofa with chairs that do not match it, a coffee table with some height and a light base, a pair of lamps, and a mirror across the room. Old things look better with new things next to them, so an antique table beside a new sofa is the whole point.
