As my style evolves, I itch to complete projects that push me out of my comfort zone and involve more care to details and depth than my previous work. I took some design risks with this latest project in the twin bedroom at Tye Street Project, and it turned out to be one of my favorite results to date. The whole concept started with a beautiful shade of pink from Behr Marquee® called One to Remember. As you'll see in the before pictures below, with the room's tall ceilings and ample natural light, the all-white walls actually felt a little cold. I never really felt like the room had enough details to really make the space feel full and welcoming, so I went with this stronger yet playful and warm pink hue for the walls. I am absolutely in love with the results - it completely changed the feel of the room, and inspired a whole new approach to the decor. See all of the details below!
Here was the room before, after my first pass just getting it functional, then with some sprucing up. Unfortunately, that painting (that really made the room) couldn't stay, so the room returned to a more lackluster state for a year before I made it a priority again. As you can see, the cooler, blue color palette was nice but not necessarily as inviting as a warmer palette could be. I think pink is the friendliest shade of the warm colors, plus I needed something that would liven up those grey headboards.
One to Remember was the perfect hue!
The trick to finding a 'grownup' pink is to avoid a bubblegum pink and lean towards a more neutral hue. Once I settled on this wonderful color I quickly covered the room in one quick coat with Behr Marquee in a satin finish. I wanted the room to have lots of pattern - like the English do so well, including a patterned lampshade! I had the euro shams and bolster pillows custom made, and found the perfect grey striped bedding at Target.
I love that the fabric patterns range from contemporary to traditional, and create a nice imperfect match with the walls. I didn't want it all to feel too coordinated, but rather a sophisticated mix that wasn't too studied. I found all my fabric at Lewis & Sheron and used Alfonso on the euro pillows, a spotted fabric on the bolsters, and Mackenzie on the lampshade.
The existing accents worked perfectly with the new scheme, like the fun floral light fixture from IKEA. The faux taxidermy heads above each bed also look great - perhaps even better now that there is some contrast with the wall color!
I moved different tables and rugs into the room from around the house, including the fun hide rug. It was swapped out from the back 'sunroom' - originally featured in my first One Room Challenge. I moved the longer desk from the window to between the beds, allowing for separate ends of the piece to be used by each guest. A longer console-style table is perfect for twin beds! The round table that now sits in front of the window creates more of a flexible surface that can be used workspace.
