When it comes to creating a versatile media room with guest sleeping space, finding the right convertible furniture is everything. I discovered this firsthand while redesigning the media room loft in my West Midtown Project. With the holidays approaching and my little sister coming home from college, I needed to reconfigure the space to accommodate both comfortable TV-watching and overnight guests.
The solution came through partnering with the Queer Eye furniture collection, available at Walmart. Their stylish storage futon became the cornerstone of my new design approach. But here's where my designer instincts kicked in – I couldn't resist adding a custom detail that would elevate this affordable piece to luxury status.
How to Customize Affordable Furniture for a Luxury Look
The secret to making budget-friendly furniture look expensive often lies in the details. For this Queer Eye futon, I added dark brown bullion trim along the edges – a simple modification that completely transformed its appearance. This type of trim adds texture and visual weight, creating the impression of custom upholstery work.
Bullion trim is particularly effective because it catches light differently than flat surfaces, adding depth and sophistication. The contrast between the olive green fabric and rich brown trim also helped tie the piece into my fall-inspired color palette.

Smart Layout Solutions for Small Media Rooms
The real magic happened when I started thinking about the existing sectional pieces separately rather than as one unit. I had a hunch that the armless sofa might fit perfectly in the nook at the far end of the space – and it did, with literally inches to spare! This created the most delightful surprise: two distinct seating areas within one cohesive room.
By positioning the armless sofa in the back nook and the futon at the front, I created natural conversation zones while maintaining clear sight lines to the TV from both areas. The chaise piece found new life against the railing, adding another comfortable spot for lounging.
What's the Best Way to Arrange Furniture in a Loft Space?
Loft spaces present unique challenges because of their open nature and often irregular dimensions. The key is to create defined zones without blocking natural light or architectural features. I use larger furniture pieces to anchor each area, then connect them visually through color and texture repetition. In this media room, the olive green futon and sectional pieces work together despite being separated by the funky shag rug that bridges the space.

Building a Fall-Inspired Color Palette Around Olive Green
The olive green futon became my color story starting point, inspiring a rich fall palette of dark brown and purple. This combination feels both sophisticated and seasonal – perfect for a media room that needs to work year-round but can embrace autumn's moodier tones.
I stepped outside my usual comfort zone with that funky shag rug, but it's become one of my favorite elements in the space. The texture adds incredible comfort underfoot while the brown tones bridge the olive and purple beautifully. Sometimes the pieces that make us slightly nervous are exactly what a room needs to come alive.

Versatile Side Tables That Work Anywhere
The other stars from the Queer Eye furniture collection are these plaster-look side tables in various sizes. Their neutral cream color and organic texture make them incredibly versatile – the kind of pieces that can move from room to room as your needs change.
I anchored the futon with two larger tables and scattered the smaller pairs throughout the space to create functional surfaces wherever someone might set down a drink or book. The varying heights add visual interest while the consistent color and texture maintain cohesion.
How Do You Choose the Right Side Tables for Your Space?
When selecting side tables, consider both function and proportion. They should be roughly the same height as your sofa arm, or within a few inches. I prefer having multiple smaller tables rather than one large coffee table in media rooms – it's easier for people to reach their snacks and drinks without disrupting others. The cream color of these particular tables works with virtually any color scheme, making them excellent investment pieces.
Adding Personal Art to Complete the Design
No room feels truly finished without something personal, which is why I created a custom painting for the far end of the space. This piece features a purple orb with gates drawn in vine charcoal – it's the beginning of a new artistic series I'm exploring that combines color and linear elements.
While I don't think the painting is quite complete yet, it already adds that crucial personal touch that transforms a furnished room into a designed space. The purple echoes the accent color I've woven throughout, while the abstract nature keeps it from competing with the room's other visual elements.

Custom Window Treatments for Privacy and Coziness
To complete the media room transformation, my mom sewed custom linen curtains with brown grosgrain trim that can be pulled across the railing. This detail serves both practical and aesthetic purposes – creating privacy when needed while adding another layer of that rich brown color I've woven throughout the space.
The ability to close off the loft area transforms its function entirely. Open, it feels connected to the larger space below. Closed, it becomes an intimate retreat perfect for movie nights or overnight guests.

What Makes a Media Room Both Functional and Beautiful?
A successful media room balances comfort, function, and style without sacrificing any element. The key is choosing pieces that serve multiple purposes – like a storage futon that provides seating, sleeping, and hidden storage. Layer in personal touches through art and custom details, then ensure the lighting and layout support both active entertainment and quiet relaxation. This space now accommodates everything from family movie nights to providing a cozy guest room for visiting sisters.
The new layout has transformed this loft into an even cozier retreat with more comfortable seating options and flexible sleeping arrangements. It's proof that thoughtful design doesn't require a complete overhaul – sometimes the magic happens when you reimagine how existing pieces can work together in fresh ways.
