There is a particular kind of disappointment that comes from good joinery in the wrong place. Well made, properly finished, and obviously added. You can see the seam between the room and the thing installed in it from the doorway.

Built-in alcove shelving is the cheapest way to make a room look like it was designed rather than furnished, and it is also the easiest thing to get subtly wrong. The difference is almost never the cabinetmaking. It is whether the joinery agreed to follow lines that were already in the room, or decided to start its own.
The room has already drawn the lines
Before anyone measures an alcove, look at what the room is telling you. The skirting has a height. The window sills sit at a level. The cornice runs at a level. The door casings have a width. Every one of those is a line the eye has already learned by the time it gets to your new shelving.
Joinery that lands on those lines disappears into the architecture. Joinery that lands a couple of inches off reads as an addition, and nobody can say why. That is the whole trick, and it costs nothing to get right at the drawing stage and a fortune to correct afterwards.
The base of a built-in should relate to the skirting rather than sitting on top of it or dying awkwardly against it. Continuing the skirting profile across the cabinet base is the standard move and it works, which is a good argument for knowing what profile you actually have. The character that a good skirting board gives a room is exactly the character your joinery should be borrowing.
Alcoves beside a chimney breast
This is the classic case and the one people most often overbuild. The two recesses either side of a chimney breast are the most natural place in a house for storage, and they are also load-bearing on the composition of the whole wall.
The rule I use: closed below, open above, and stop the open shelving at a line that relates to something. The mantel height, the picture rail, the top of the door casing. Running shelves to the ceiling in a tall room can work beautifully, but it has to be a decision rather than a default, because a full-height wall of shelving changes the proportion of the room permanently.
Match the two sides. Not identically — the alcoves are rarely the same width, and forcing symmetry usually means one side looks squeezed. Match the horizontal lines instead, so the shelf heights and the cabinet tops align across the chimney breast even when the widths differ. The eye reads the horizontals and forgives the rest.
Paint the joinery the wall colour if you want it to recede, or a deliberate contrast if you want it to be the event. What does not work is joinery in a white that is not quite the trim white. That near-miss is worse than either choice.
Window seats depend entirely on the window
A window seat is the most-requested built-in and the one most often defeated by the opening it sits under.
You need reveal depth. A window set flush in a thin wall gives you a ledge, not a seat, and no amount of cushion fixes it. You also need the sill height to work — too high and the seat is a shelf you cannot use, too low and you are sitting on the floor looking at a wall.
Which is why a window seat is often a window conversation before it is a joinery one. If the glazing is being replaced anyway, this is the moment to get the proportions and the reveal right rather than fitting the seat around whatever is there. A period property replacing units while keeping the original sightlines is a specialist job, and people in Shropshire looking at windows in Oswestry or anywhere else with a lot of period stock are usually trying to solve exactly this: slim sightlines and correct glazing bars, with modern performance behind them.
Get storage into the base if the depth allows, but hinge it rather than making it a lift-off lid. Nobody lifts the lid twice.
Depth is where amateurs give themselves away
Standard shelf depth is a compromise nobody asked for. Books want about ten inches. Objects want more. A television wants a specific number you should look up rather than guess.
Deep shelving throughout makes a room feel heavy and turns the back of every shelf into a dust shelf. Shallow shelving throughout looks flimsy and cannot hold anything with presence. Varying the depth — deeper at the base, shallower going up — does two things at once: it gives you the storage where you need it and it lightens the composition where the eye travels.
The other reason to vary it is that objects and books want different treatment, and a wall of uniform shelves forces them to compete. This is the same layering argument that governs everything else in a room, and mixing what sits on the shelves matters as much as the shelves themselves — old things look better with new things next to them, and built-ins are where that happens most visibly.
Small rooms need this more, not less
The instinct in a tight room is to avoid built-ins because they eat space. It is backwards. Freestanding furniture in a small room wastes the gaps around it; joinery built into the actual shape of the room does not.
A run of shallow cupboards along an awkward wall, a bench with storage under a window, a full-height cupboard filling a dead corner — these buy back space that a bookcase and a sideboard would have squandered. Most of the useful moves in making a compact room work harder come down to building storage into the architecture instead of standing it in front of the architecture.
Old house or new one
None of this requires a period property. Character is built through choices rather than inherited, and a house finished last year can carry good joinery just as convincingly as one finished in 1890 — arguably more easily, because the walls are straight.
In a new build, the joinery is often what supplies the architectural interest the builder left out. In a period house, it is what recovers interest that was stripped out in the seventies. Mid-century houses did this particularly well, pairing restrained built-in joinery with confident colour elsewhere, and the better mid-century renovations keep that joinery rather than clearing it.
If you want more architectural weight in a room and only have the budget for one thing, built-ins beat almost every alternative — though panelling and picture rails run a close second and cost less.
The test
Stand in the doorway. If your eye finds a line where the joinery meets the room and stops there, something is not aligned. If it travels across the whole wall without catching, the built-ins have been absorbed into the architecture and are now doing what they were supposed to do, which is look like they came with the house.
