In an open floorpan space, rugs are crucial for defining distinct areas, and in the West Midtown project this is especially true on the main level. While the staircase splits the middle of the floor, the dining room and kitchen are side-by-side and can both be seen from the living room. The new kitchen island we added helps define the edge of the workspace, but I wanted to make the kitchen feel even more like its own room (and soften the design) with a vintage kitchen runner. One of the great things about vintage runners is they come in a variety of unique sizes. This space needed a non-standard size to run the length of the countertop and had to be skinny enough to fit between the island and counters without running into the stairs. This runner is 3'2" x 10’8” and fits just perfectly in the room!
It’s best to use a low-pile rug in the kitchen for easier maintenance. This hand-knotted rug is perfect because it won’t catch anything in it’s construction and is sturdy for frequent vacuuming. It also makes it easy to clean up any spills because it’s less absorbent than a tufted design.
I looked for a design that would be busy enough to hide any spills or stains, but not so busy that it would compete with the wallpaper backsplash. I also wanted to pull some warm colors from the wallpaper palette without overwhelming the room, so the muted tones in this vintage runner are so perfect for this space! I love how the orange, brown, and beige complement the green on the kitchen island.
The space feels so complete with this vintage kitchen runner – it adds so much character to the space.
