Beautiful Boudoirs: Transitional Bedroom Rug Ideas

Beautiful Boudoirs: Transitional Bedroom Rug Ideas

A thoughtfully chosen rug can transform a bedroom from simple to sumptuous—grounding the space, softening every step, and tying the entire design together. In transitional interiors, where traditional forms meet modern sensibility, the rug becomes a quiet anchor for the room’s style and soul. As a designer and founder of a handmade rug studio, I’m always seeking pieces that strike a balance between timeless craftsmanship and contemporary livability. In this guide, I’m sharing my approach to selecting the perfect transitional rug for the bedroom, along with a curated selection of designs to help you find the ideal foundation for your personal retreat.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bedroom Rugs

1. What size rug should I use under a queen bed?

For a queen bed, the most popular rug sizes are 8x10 and 9x12. An 8x10 rug will typically allow for two feet of rug around the sides and bottom of the bed. If you have the space, a 9x12 rug offers a more generous layout and can accommodate nightstands on the rug as well.

2. Should bedroom rugs go under nightstands?

If you’re using a 9x12 or larger rug, you can include nightstands on top of the rug for a more anchored look. Otherwise, it’s fine to start the rug a few inches in front of the nightstands. A consistent reveal around the bed looks intentional and polished.

3. What’s the best rug material for bedroom rugs?

Wool is a favorite for its durability, softness, and natural insulation—making it perfect for underfoot comfort in the bedroom. Bamboo silk also offers a beautiful sheen in a bedroom and is well-suited for a lower-traffic space like this. For a more luxurious feel, consider a Tibetan weave construction or hand-knotted rugs, which offer incredible texture and longevity.

4. Can I use a runner rug in the bedroom?

Absolutely. Runner rugs work beautifully on either side of the bed in smaller rooms or as an accent near a dresser or closet. They’re especially useful in narrow layouts or bedrooms where a large area rug doesn’t make sense.

5. What rug color works best in a bedroom?

Neutrals like ivory, beige, and soft gray are timeless and serene, while blues and muted greens can add calming color. Bedrooms are a great space to incorporate subtle pattern and texture without overwhelming the design.

Mamluk Hand-Knotted Wool Area Rug by Kevin Francis Design

Mamluk Hand-Knotted Rug >

I've loved this bedroom for years, so it was fun to find a home for my sunny Mamluk rug in this light-filled space. I love how the gold accents in the sun medallions in this Turkish rug design tie-in the velvet lumbars on the bed, and the blue provides a soothing foundation for the room. I added a Venetian mirror to amp-up the eclectic glamour!

Lucca Hand-Tufted Maze Rug by Kevin Francis Design

Lucca Tufted Maze Rug >

In this sophisticated, minimal bedroom design for model Martha Hunt, I knew the Lucca concentric maze design would provide the perfect, meditative element to the room. In the Wheat tan colorway, it doesn't draw away from the striking dusty pink bed or textured green plaster walls. For an unexpected vintage element, I also added an oil portrait.

Knossos Hand-Tufted Maze Rug by Kevin Francis Design

Knossos Tufted Maze Rug >

This layered bedroom in the Hollywood Hills is filled with vintage artwork and warm textiles, making it the perfect setting for my Knossos hand-tufted maze rug. I placed the rug beneath the bed to introduce a graphic counterpoint to the surrounding softness and echo the palette of the upholstery. An antique gilt mirror provides a refined focal point above the bed.

Whether you’re designing a serene sanctuary or a tailored guest suite, the right rug can elevate your bedroom with warmth, intention, and lasting beauty. Transitional rugs offer the best of both worlds—classic motifs, softened palettes, and just enough edge to feel current.
