The Return of Silver and Chrome in Interior Design
There's a surprising reason why silver is coming back into the limelight after being outshined by brass for the past five (or more) years. Color palettes in the past two years have swiftly shifted from the stark, cool grays of the 2010's to much warmer, yellow-toned colors. You can even see this shift in the color editing on photography in shelter magazines, which have become much warmer (also, darker and moodier) in color temperature. While brass can still be found in many of these spaces, nickel and chrome metals are starting to be found more frequently in the design world, and I saw a lot of gorgeous chrome accents on furniture during my recent visit to High Point Market with the Design Influencers Tour. Don't miss my previous "Trend Report" post on the Art Deco influence at market.
As color palettes are now shifting towards warmer tones, including deeper shades of beige, brown, and creamy hues, we're witnessing a renaissance of silver in home decor. This resurgence of silver's popularity adds a fresh, cool-toned twist to the contemporary interior design landscape. The key to embracing this shift in metallic trends is to consider the harmonious balance between your chosen color palette and metallic accents. Metallics, like silver, act as a stunning counterpoint to warmer color schemes. Silver and chrome accents can instantly balance a room filled with tan and cream shades, infusing it with a touch of modernity. The cool, sleek nature of silver beautifully complements these earthy tones, creating a dynamic and inviting atmosphere that appeals to the senses.
What is the difference between polished nickel and chrome?
When selecting metallic finishes in interior design, two standout contenders are polished nickel and chrome—both timeless, versatile options with distinct visual and functional qualities. Understanding the differences between these two finishes can help you make the right choice for your space, whether you're updating a bathroom, kitchen, or lighting scheme.
Polished nickel is known for its warm undertone, often exhibiting a subtle golden or amber hue that brings softness and depth to a room. This makes it a favorite for designers looking to mix metals or add a more classic, lived-in feel to transitional interiors. Over time, polished nickel can develop a beautiful natural patina, adding character and a hint of vintage charm. It’s especially well-suited for traditional or eclectic design schemes where layered finishes create a more curated look.
In contrast, chrome offers a cool, highly reflective surface with a mirror-like finish that pairs seamlessly with modern or minimalist spaces. Its crisp, silvery tone lends a clean and contemporary edge, making it ideal for streamlined kitchens and modernist bathrooms. Beyond aesthetics, chrome is also extremely durable, resistant to tarnishing, and well-suited for humid environments, making it a smart choice for high-traffic areas and utility spaces like powder rooms and laundry rooms.
When it comes to chrome vs. polished nickel, your decision should be guided by both style and setting. For a warm, classic finish that matures over time, opt for polished nickel. If you’re aiming for sleek, modern elegance and easy maintenance, chrome might be the perfect fit.
Is gold out of style?
While metallic trends—from matte black to rose gold—tend to rise and fall with the seasons, the most enduring interiors rely on finishes with intrinsic material integrity. In my experience, the best choice of metal in interior design comes down to quality and authenticity rather than passing trends. Natural metals like raw brass, polished nickel, and silver leaf are not only visually appealing, but they also offer a level of depth and character that synthetic or coated finishes simply can’t replicate.
These materials age gracefully, developing rich patinas over time that add to their charm, and they’re endlessly versatile across design styles—from classic to contemporary. While they often come at a higher price point, their timelessness and longevity make them a worthy investment for any well-appointed space. Whether it’s brass hardware, a silver-leaf mirror, or polished nickel fixtures, a natural metal finish will always feel elevated and relevant, no matter the current trend cycle.
So while trends may highlight different metallic moments, choosing metals based on their natural beauty and lasting quality ensures your home remains stylish for years to come.

As we continue to see a resurgence of silver, chrome, and other cool-toned finishes in home design, it’s clear that metallics are more than a fleeting trend—they’re a powerful tool for adding sophistication, depth, and visual contrast to interiors. Whether you're drawn to the sleek reflectivity of chrome accents, the warmth of polished nickel, or the character of aged brass, choosing natural metal finishes ensures a look that feels both current and enduring.
Ultimately, the best metallics are those that reflect your personal style while honoring the materials themselves. Thoughtfully selected interior design metals—especially those with a natural or artisanal quality—will always stand the test of time, elevating your space with subtle shine and timeless appeal.
