Charcoal Rooms & The Best Dark Gray Paint Colors

by Kevin Francis O'Gara

When it comes to sophisticated interiors, a coat of dark charcoal gray paint can be counted on to create an atmosphere of intimacy and moody drama. While you may gravitate toward lighter colors for living areas, there is an undeniable appeal to using deep, moody shades of gray to instantly elevate a space. One of the surprising advantages of dark hue paint colors, as I used in this small Atlanta living room, is that they can actually obscure the edges of a room, creating the illusion of greater space. By blending walls and corners together, the resulting sense of cohesiveness can open up smaller rooms in a way that lighter colors simply cannot.

Charcoal gray interior paint colors vary tremendously in undertone. Warmer grays complement darker wood antiques and traditional furnishings—and I tend to lean toward warm-undertone grays in my own projects. Cooler grays (like Englewood Cliffs, below) pair beautifully with warm brass accents; the coolness of the paint helps balance the warmth of the metalwork. One of the great strengths of dark charcoal paint is its versatility across design styles—from classic and traditional to modern and transitional.
