How to Choose the Right Size Area Rug

(Interior Design by Kevin Francis Design
An area rug can completely transform a room and provide a foundation for the rest of your decor to come together. Starting with the right size rug will set you up for success – whether you're decorating a small bedroom or a large living room. Choosing the wrong size area rug is a common mistake, but it's also a one-step fix that can really tie the whole room design together. In this blog post, we will give you some tips on how to find the right size area rug for your living room, bedroom, or office with the best furniture layouts. We'll also provide some helpful images so you can see what each layout looks like!

Choosing Area Rug Sizes

When it comes to area rug sizes, there are a few things you should keep in mind. First, you'll want to make sure that your area rug is proportional to the size of your room. A good rule of thumb is that your area rug should be at least one-third the size of your room. So, if you have a small living room, you would want an area rug that is about 5x8 or 6x9 feet in size. If you have a larger living room, you might want an area rug that is 8x10 feet or larger. It all depends on the size of your room and how you want to lay out your furniture.

Furniture Layouts With Area Rugs

Another thing to keep in mind is the furniture in the space. You'll want to make sure that your area rug complements your furniture layout and doesn't make it look cluttered or busy. A common mistake people make is putting a too-small area rug in a large room or placing a too-large area rug in a small room. Both of these will make your room look unbalanced and can make it difficult to arrange your furniture in a way that looks cohesive.

Area Rug Sizing Tips

(via Dimensions)

Here are a few helpful tips for different rooms in your home:

- For a living room with a couch and chairs arranged around a coffee table, you'll want an area rug that is large enough to fit under at least the front legs of all the furniture. This will create a cohesive look and help define the seating area.
- For dining rooms, you'll want an area rug that is large enough to fit under the table and chairs when they are pulled out. This will ensure that your area rug doesn't get caught under the feet of your dining chairs.
- In a bedroom, you'll want an area rug that is large enough to fit under the bed with room to land on the rug on either side of the bed when you wake up in the morning. This will create a focal point in the room and make it more inviting.
- For an office, you'll want an area rug that is large enough to fit under your desk and chair but still be visible in the room. Oftentimes the desk can takeover the entire rug, so leave enough space to see the design!
