When I specify materials for a new rug design, the decision I revisit least is the wool. Our hand-knotted and hand-loomed rugs, the Iconium Collection, the Cumulus Cloud rug, and the CHROMA collection, are all made from 100% New Zealand wool, and that's not an accident. It's widely considered the finest rug wool in the world. Here's why it earns that reputation.
Whiter Wool, Truer Color
New Zealand wool is among the whitest natural wool available anywhere. That matters more than you might think: the whiter the base fiber, the more faithfully it takes dye. The saturated hues of CHROMA and the nuanced, layered palettes of the Iconium rugs are only possible because the wool underneath starts nearly white — colors come out clear and true rather than muddied.
A Longer, Stronger Fiber
Sheep raised in New Zealand's temperate climate produce a long-staple fleece with remarkable consistency. Longer fibers spin into stronger, smoother yarn that sheds less, resists pilling, and holds up under decades of foot traffic. It's a big part of why a well-made wool rug is a genuinely multigenerational purchase — and what separates heirloom quality from the rest. (I cover the other tells in my guide to spotting a high-quality wool rug.)
Naturally Practical
Wool's virtues aren't just about luxury. The fiber's natural lanolin makes it inherently soil- and stain-resistant — spills bead on the surface rather than soaking in immediately. Wool is naturally flame-resistant, hypoallergenic for most households, and acts as a natural humidity buffer, absorbing and releasing moisture as your home changes with the seasons. It's also a renewable, biodegradable material: sheep are shorn annually, and the fiber returns to the earth at the end of its very long life. Soft Underfoot, Built to Last
There's a reason our hand-knotted rugs feel different the moment you step on them. New Zealand wool has a natural loft and resilience — the pile compresses underfoot and springs back, rather than crushing flat. Combined with dense hand-knotted or handloomed construction, it produces a rug that's soft and velvety today and still performing in thirty years.
